Which is more important – Hair typing? Porosity? or Density?

Wonder what’s more important when taking care of that beautiful head of hair? Initially, we read about hair typing and thought this was important but then density and porosity came along and now we are confused as to what matters the most.


… but to understand which is more important it’s fitting that you know what they are.


You are born with either naturally curly hair, or straight hair (or wavy). The amount of curl, wave, or lack thereof, is dependent on the number of disulfide bonds between hair proteins found in the hair shaft; the greater the number of links, the curlier the hair, and the fewer the number of links, the straighter the hair.

Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein, which grows from the follicle. Keratins, and other proteins, are formulated in the cells of the hair follicle. All of the proteins become a part of the hair shaft and contain sulfur atoms. When two sulfur atoms pair up and bond, they form a disulfide bond. If the two sulfur atoms in the same protein are at a distance, and join to form the disulfide bond, the protein will bend. This is how your curls are created.

Andre Walker,Oprah’s beloved hair stylist, created a broad-spectrum hair typing system that classifies various hair textures and breaks each hair type down into 4 types with added sub categories. [SOURCE] This being Type 1: Straight Hair, Type 2: Wavy Hair (2a, 2b, 2c), Type 3: Curly Hair (3a, 3b, 3c), Type 4: Kinky Hair (4a, 4b 4c).


Porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb moisture. Hair that is considered to be highly porous is typically damaged and separated from the cuticle. This can be a result of many different factors such as it being over processed to simply having a need for more moisture on a daily basis. On the other hand, hair that is not very porous will be difficult to chemically straighten or perform any type of chemical treatment due to its inability to absorb.

Knowing your hair porosity will help you determine how much moisture your hair needs on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to achieve the look that you are going for. In addition, you will be better equipped to make decisions regarding your hair products.


On the contrary, hair density looks at the number of hair strands that you have per square inch on your scalp. People with low hair density are said to have thinner hair while people with high hair density have thicker hair. Knowing how dense your hair is will provide you to better choose products that will help either increase the volume in your hair or tone it down.

Does how curly or dense one’s hair is determine growth or the health of one’s hair? If you said no, then would you consider these as important in your natural hair care regimen? Porosity, on the other hand, coincides with health of hair as moisturized hair is insusceptible to breakage. If one moisturizes their hair according to the hair porosity they have then they are better able retain more length.
