Introduce yourself.

My name is Patrina Gayle.

How long have you been natural?

I began my transitioning from relaxed to natural hair in May 2012.ย I have been natural for four years.
How would you describe your hair texture?
To me, I have different hair textures in sections of my head. The front section varies between 4A and 4B as well as the back section. While the middle section is more 4B/4C.

What is your styling regimen like?
My styling regimen mostly consists of twist outs, braid outs, mini twists and up doโ€™s. Iโ€™ll do braid extensions once in a while as protective styling.
What is your wash-day regimen like?
I have different wash days where Iโ€™d only use a condition or co-wash and days where Iโ€™d use shampoo. On the day I condition or co-wash is only to revive my hair with moisture. On the days I use shampoo, I normally do a deep condition or a hot oil treatment and the shampoo is used to really clean my scalp.
What is your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you donโ€™t have a lot of time to style?
My favorite go-to style is an updo because it is quick and easy. I wear it in a curly puff or I tuck my kinks in a bun.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require TLC?
Problem areas I have are my hair tends to dry out easily so I try to moisturize without my scalp feeling oily and gross. It is easily damaged by heat and I personally think my hair needs more body.
What are your favorite products to use on your hair?
I do not think I have a favorite product. I am still trying to figure out what my hair likes and to be honest hair products are rather expensive so I try to find the best affordable products. So, for now, I use Cantu products, Eco Styler gel, coconut oil and water.
What problems have you encountered on your natural hair journey?
The problems I have encountered are growth, the thickness of hair and achieving styles. I thought my hair was not growing but it takes time so I had to learn to be patient. The thickness however still remains an issue and on my journey, I could not find styles that worked for me.

What does being natural means to you?
My natural hair defines who I am and where I am from. I am proud that I went natural because I learnt to love my hair. I also learnt that it is just hair and I should let it be. I try not live up to the standards of other natural haired individuals because we all have different types of hair that require different needs. My hair no matter if it’s matted or tamed doesnโ€™t change who I am. I am me.
Where can you be found?ย
